HINETEIWAIWA ~ Menstrual cycles

Our innate power is our ikura.

She is the beginning of human kind,

A time we embody her sacredness as she draws upon her cycles within.

Our traditions and ancient rites around our menstrual cycles have been distorted and lost to many pre-colonial.

Western educational systems taught we bleed as if it’s a burden, to use tampons and sanitary pads to clean ourselves up. Contraception that can tamper with our natural cycles. Whilst disregarding the treasures and wisdoms of sacredness with our toto~ our blood.

She is the same blood that has travelled through all your tipuna. All our grandmothers that have come before us.

She is the richest nourishing blood of all.

Used for spiritual protection,

And our direct line to nga Atua.

She is kurawaka the sacred red soils.

Learning to treasure and respect her.

Each cycle is a time for renewal and an opportunity to noho puku~ go within.

To celebrate and honour the divine feminine.

Learning that returning our toto/blood back to the fertile soils of Papatūānuku each cycle sustains her, as she sustains us.

What a beautiful time to come full circle,

These are the cycles that are embedded in our DNA.

To teach our babies these ancient practices that we were once fully immersed in.

A time of reclamation and upholding our tribal traditions through ceremonial rituals.
